4 Historic Sites of Calvi

Calvi, perched by the sea and facing the mountains, is a city steeped in history. Here, heritage isn’t shown : it’s lived. It’s in the stone of the ramparts, the worn steps of the citadel, the sunlight hitting the old façades.

Calvi is best explored on foot, with no set plan, just follow the walls and the wind.

The Citadel of Calvi

Imposing and majestic, it has overlooked the gulf since the 13th century. Built by the Genoese, it has stood the test of time without losing its charm. You enter via a cobbled ramp. Inside: narrow alleys, a church, a few spectacular viewpoints, and the supposed birthplace of Christopher Columbus. It’s not a museum : it’s a living, inhabited neighborhood. The sea is everywhere, visible at every turn.

Cathedral St. John the Baptist

Located in the heart of the citadel, this baroque church is simple yet filled with light. Inside, it features high ceilings, a few frescoes, and a peaceful atmosphere. It remains a gathering place for locals, especially during religious celebrations.

The Salt Tower

Just below the citadel, near the port, this former watchtower once guarded the city’s entrance. Now restored, it hosts exhibitions during the summer. Its simple architecture reflects Calvi’s strategic importance in Corsican maritime history.

Chapel Notre-Dame de la Serra

Set back on the heights, this small 19th-century chapel offers one of the most breathtaking views in the region. It’s accessible by car (10 minutes) or on foot (about a 45-minute walk from town) and overlooks the entire bay. The spot is peaceful, often empty. A statue of the Virgin gazes toward the horizon. Locals and visitors alike come here : drawn by the view, and the silence.
